In the introduction to this 1993 reprinting of my short story “The Suicide Artist” (which originally appeared in the chapbook Suicide Art), editors Stephen Jones and Ramsey Campbell wrote that, “as always, we lead off Best New Horror with one of the most powerful stories in the volume.”
It’s always an honor to have a story reprinted in a year’s best anthology, but to be chosen to lead off the book … well … it’s humbling.
If you’d like to read the story but can’t track down a copy of Best New Horror 4, you can always get your hands on my collection These Words Are Haunted.
