What qualified me to write a comic book about the Welcome Back, Kotter gang? I’d like to think it’s because the editor thought I was funny guy, but it’s more likely because I’d attended high school in Brooklyn and I seemed like just another sweathog.
Surprisingly, these stories were some of the easiest I’d ever written. I was a big fan of the show at the time, and had internalized the voices of the characters to such an extent that all I had to do was put them in a situation and they’re react just like their TV selves.
This issue was the first comic book story I had published with a company other than Marvel. Once I’d resigned from my staff position there, I was then free to freelance for what for years had been the competition, and Kotter became my DC debut.
